A Bible Study on the Life of David

Second Session, November 20, A.D. 2011

I. Introduction: 5 - 10 Minute Discussion of homework assignment from first session, namely:

Without looking at your Bible, name 7 people with whom David had some kind of relationship, family or otherwise.

Listed here in alphabetical order, the following Biblical persons were named: Abigail, Abner, Absalom, Bathsheba, Goliath, Jesse, Joab, Jonathan, Mephibosheth, Michal, Nathan, Samuel, Saul, Shimei, Solomon

Without looking at YOUR Bible, can you identify each of these and offer a brief summary of his or her relation to David? Can you add to the list?

II. The "Canonical Scope" of David's Life

A. 1 Samuel 16:1 through 1 Kings 2:10. This historical portion of Scripture begins with David's youth and continues through his death. There is an emphasis on David's warfare

B. 1 Kings 2:11 through the end of 2 Kings (ch. 25) does not deal biographically with David

C. 1 Chronicles 10 through 29. Chapter 10:1-12 parallels 1 Samuel 31, the account of Saul's death, and chapter 29 is another account of David's death. There is an emphasis in this historical portion of Scripture on the ark and Levitical worship

II. A Chronological Sketch of David's Life (a "helicopter view")

A. 1 Sam. 16 Samuel anoints young David who becomes Saul's armor bear

B. 1 Sam. 17 David defeats Goliath

C. 1 Sam. 18 Two loves and one hatred are conceived

D.
1. Conflicts with house of Saul, Philistines, Syrians: David emerges victorious
Psalms written during this period:

2. 1 Chronicles 11-16 The ark, and the establishment of Levitical worship

E. 2 Sam. 7 / 1 Chronicles 17 David's desire and prayer

F. 2 Samuel 11 David's great sin; 2 Samuel 13-18 Absalom's rebellion

1 . 2 Samuel 24, David's sin regarding the census

G. 2 Sam. 24 —1 Kings 2 / 1 Chron. 28,29 David forgiven and finishes well, Solomon succeeds him.

Homework: Find three Biblical examples of anointing BESIDES Samuel's of David, and be prepared to discuss what this Biblical term means.

Possibly helpful comment on 1 Chronicles 27:24 – per Easton's Bible Dictionary: these "...were statistical state records; one of the public sources from which the compiler of the Books of Chronicles derived information on various public matters."
